El Paso is a city in the Borderlands of Texas. The major city of Juarez, Mexico is located on the other side of the border. While many people see this part of the country as a wild and lawless place, it is, in fact, one of the most diverse and truly multi-cultural places in the US. The international bridges, used to cross over the Rio Grande between the US and Mexico, can be chaotic. During peak travel times, in the morning and evening, it can take hours to cross the border in a vehicle. However, there are easier ways to get across. Most people choose to walk into Mexico. There is a footbridge near the downtown vehicle crossing. Most of the shopping areas on the Juarez side of the border are located within a few blocks of the bridge. Also, once on the Mexican side of the border, there are taxis and bus tours that can take you deeper into Juarez. If you plan to make a trip to Juarez part of your El Paso excursion, remember that passports are now required to re-enter the US. But Juarez is not a necessary part of a fun trip to El Paso. There is plenty to do on the US side of the border. The Franklin Mountains are scenic and rugged. They sit just outside of the city. There are ranger-guided tours offered for anyone who wants to call ahead and arrange them. McKelligon Canyon is another outdoor spot popular with picnickers and mountain bikers. The cuisine of El Paso, understandably, has a very Latin flare. Barbecue joints, steakhouse and mobile burrito kitchens, called Gut Trucks, are found throughout town. Cincinnati Street, near the campus of the University of Texas – El Paso, has a strip of bars that are cheaper than most places around town. Of course, tourists who venture across the border will find Juarez is cheaper still.
