Great Ways to Add Life to Your Salads

By: Ken BANDJOUN

Putting a salad on the table is not a bad thing to do. Salads are especially important in a vegetarian diet. Salads are a great way to eat a tasty variety of vegetables with dinner. Salads are colorful and nutritious. With the endless combinations of vegetables you can make, I hope that you aren't bored with salads. You may however be bored with putting the same old dressing on the table with the salad every night. It doesn't matter how creative you are with vegetable combinations. If you dress your salads with the same old dressings time and time again, they will all taste the same. When it's time to get some variety into your salad routine, it's time to break out of the salad dressing mold. Here are some fun things to do to dress up your vegetables.

Splash Some Color on the Table
One of the easiest ways to make sure the meal you prepare contains balanced nutrition is to include a wide variety of color. Don't be afraid to have too many side dishes. One of the best parts of having guests over is to offer a wide variety of choices. You get to try cooking several different things, your guests may pick and choose what they like and you can almost guarantee that the table will be beautiful and full of filling food. There are a few colorful foods that could be included on nearly any menu.

Water, Water Everywhere
The first drink option is probably the most obvious. Water does seem to go with nearly any food you may choose to eat. While it is not difficult to figure out that water can be paired with anything, it can be easily overlooked. Regardless of the meal you are serving and regardless of the corresponding drink that will work well with that meal, you should always serve water as well. Water works well as a palate cleanser and is essential for maintaining appropriate hydration levels. Even if you have the perfect drink for the meal, it won't be sufficient without a glass of water on the side.

Sweet potatoes are a super food. By including simple baked sweet potatoes you will offer your guests a vitamin rich starch that is light and satisfying. Sweet potatoes are great just baked with some butter and brown sugar or mashed with a little added vanilla or lemon.

If you add nuts, you probably don't need croutons. If you add fruit, you probably will want to add a flavorful cheese. Dried fruits are fantastic for adding to your salads. They burst with flavor and add great nutrition and a fun chew. Eggs are a good source of protein as an addition to your salad, but use them carefully. They are best when combined with tomatoes and other bright vegetables rather than cheeses and nuts.

Salads are great for a dinner starter or as a meal by themselves. If you are bored with your salads, try dressing them up a little. Have fun mixing all kinds of new salads.
