Moneymaker 'behind online poker surge'

The growing popularity of online poker can be attributed to one man, according to an industry insider.

Alan Bowden, editor of InsidePoker Magazine, explains that Chris Moneymaker is behind the uptake of online poker in recent years.

Mr Moneymaker won the 2003 World Series of Poker, a land-based event for which qualifiers are held at a number of online poker sites.

Now Mr Bowden suggests that players the world over are keen to emulate his success in an attempt to become millionaires.

With a total prize pool of more than $180 million (£91 million) available in the 2008 World Series of Poker, such an ambition might not be out of the question.

Mr Bowden comments: "An amateur player entered a $40 tournament and ended up winning the World Series of Poker.

"And that basically started the whole online poker boom."
