The great state of Texas is rich with a culture defined by its history, music, food and art. While Texas’ material culture contributes to its stereotypical legend of Western grit, spicy foods and eclectic music, it the artistic aftertaste of the Lone Star State’s visual culture that differentiates it from the rest of the nation. The early history of Texas art is commonly associated with great western push of Manifest Destiny and the ruggedness of the cowboy culture. More recently, the emergence of a new generation of artists have redefined the creative dynamics of what it means to be a Texas artist, exploring all media and new frontiers of artistic expression. Shelley Tate Garner is a contemporary multi-media artist who currently teaches private art lessons and actively participates in the Denison, Texas art community as a picture framer, gallery owner/director and professional artist. She is currently displaying an Acrylics on Acrylic series that explores an inner journey of emotional extremes through a visual medium that is inspired by collage, sculpture and painting with modern materials and diverse handling of the media. Her explosions of color and bold patterns convey joy, excitement, pleasure and exhilaration, while the softer and more introspective works evoke a sense of reflection, meditation and contemplation. She describes the series as "stories of my explorations, thoughts about man and nature, creation, creativity, art history, and formal relationships with the artworks themselves." Every piece by Austin artist Paul Stankiewicz is a self-proclaimed experiment with a broad range of images that reflect his varied interests and versatility. From large, sanded down canvases to layered cut wood panels that are animated with the crank of a handle, Paul’s inspiration comes from childhood memories, songs on the radio, and photographs of iconic Austin scenes. His paintings weave together layers of color and texture to create an impression of the subjects. He paints vividly with recognizable, but sometimes illusional photo-like imagery that appears distinctly abstract to the close observer. He resists using smaller detailed brushes to allow the viewer to complete his paintings in their mind. One of the greatest trademarks of Monica Araoz’s work is her unique use of texture in each piece that creates a visual linkage to Mother Earth. Her primary artistic objective is to emphasize the greatness in simplicity. She is inspired by the basic forms of Mother Earth - a rock formation, rain drops, and the color palette of dusk - and incorporates its beauty by confronting fortuitous events with controlled and planned interventions of color and texture. Monica considers herself a self-taught artist with a fascination with the never ending learning process of artistic expression. Her contemporary abstract work is widely collected throughout the United States, Mexico and Venezuela. Texas has a rich culture of eclectic artists that range from contemporary abstract to multi-media masters.
