The use of peptides in modern science

By: Mathew Petrenko

In human organism amino acids are connected and adhered by means of polymers called peptides. Such connection is called peptide bond. When many peptides mould a molecule, that is called a protein or a polypeptide molecule. All the peptides researches are carried out to define characteristics of amino acid that is in connection with peptides and its ratio.

Maybe it is logical to name the products of peptide synthesis from amino acid as proteins but they are commonly called peptides. Nevertheless, as technology becomes better and better at producing ever larger peptide rows, this naming convention no longer reflects the status quo.

The main criterion which is used during making peptides classifications is the manner they are created. The first kind of peptides is generated from the translation of messenger ribonucleic acid. They are named ribosomal peptides. During the process of reaching ripeness peptides are involved into digestion action by ferments. Researchers call this process as proteolysis. In higher creatures ribosomal peptides may operate as hormones or even signaling matters.

Next class of peptides is named nonribosomal peptides. The basic principle of their producing is matching their individual enzyme characteristics. Peptides of that kind can perform a huge amount of different functions in the organism. For example glutathione that is usually used as antioxidant. Some plants include nonribosomal peptides as well. The other kind of peptides is included into many sorts of milk and digest meat. When bacteria or fungi are grown in a dish, peptones are used to nurture them.

Peptides have become very necessary in molecular biological research, because they contribute to the production of peptide antibodies in organism without the necessity to have a pure protein under the experiment. Antigenic peptides cannot be synthesized for the entire quantity of necessary protein, but only for part of it. Later these sections help to produce antibodies in the animals.

Mass spectrometry uses peptides to perform a huge amount of different discoveries that is why interest to peptides increases significantly. Mass spectrometry can monitor all the way of peptide creating and development and all the required information is only mass and sequence of peptide.

Peptides also help scientists study and uncover new and existing proteins and their functions. Biologists generate peptides, conduct experiments where connections between peptides and proteins happen and use such empirical findings to improve our comprehending of various illnesses. Peptides help to get known more about even so serious illnesses as cancer.
