Triple Bypass Surgery Linked to Kidney Failure Resulting in Death

By: Paul Justice

Open heart surgery is the most common surgery in the United States. This might sound alarming and might pose certain questions as to why this is occurring. The need for a bypass surgery is because there is a blockage in your arteries that is cutting off the circulation of blood. A heart bypass surgery is performed to reduce the pressure of chest pain that is occurring due to the lack of flow of blood and oxygen to the heart. The number of bypasses is attributed to the number of coronary arteries grafted from another region of the body to be replaced in the heart. For example in a triple bypass surgery, three coronary arteries are taken from other places in the body to replace those that are clogged in the heart. The coronary arteries that are abstracted from other places in the body are much more important to be replaced in the heart than where they are currently placed. Coronary arteries are typically taken from places in the body such as in the leg or arm.

The number of bypasses one has done does not necessarily mean that they are in a worse or better condition than someone else. For example a person might only have a single bypass because other coronary arteries are not available for use, in which someone could have a triple bypass surgery because there was an adequate supply of coronary arteries to be donated to the heart. During a triple bypass surgery the heart must be stopped to perform the surgery. Therefore there is in need of a drug to control the amount of bleeding during surgery. A drug typically sued in the past was called Trasylol, manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. The FDA eventually recalled the drug because it was linked to cause kidney failure resulting in death. Trasylol was attributed to over 20,000 deaths because of kidney failure. Not only was this drug killing people, but its manufacturer was also making shady moves. Bayer Pharmaceuticals did their own study of the effects of taking Trasylol years before the FDA had done their own study. What they found was disturbing in which they unethically decided not to tell the FDA of their findings. What they did in fact find was that Trasylol has caused kidney failure in thousands of patients attributing to their deaths.

Anyone who has gone through a heart bypass surgery, including single, double, and triple bypass surgeries is at risk for kidney failure. Bayer also had regularly meetings with the FDA in which they did not tell them of the ill side effects that their drug caused. The FDA reported that if Bayer reporting their findings of Trasylol to them they would have immediately taken Trasylol off the market. It was over two years since Bayer had done their own study to the time that Trasylol was finally taken off the market. Bayer could have saved the lives of thousands but they chose to earn profits instead. If you or a loved one has undergone a triple bypass surgery that lead to kidney failure, contact a Trasylol attorney today.
