A former industrial town that has seen its population dwindle as factories began getting shut down, it is mostly known for its hard luck football team and icy cold winters. Sure, Niagara Falls is only 30 minutes away by car or bus, but why stay in Buffalo? Buffalo is a working-class town. Perhaps some people will find that refreshing when comparing the city to its cosmopolitan downstate kin, New York City. But Buffalo is once again coming into its own. There are several universities in the area. Museums and art galleries have sprung up, making Buffalo a center for culture in upstate New York. In addition, there is a down-home food and restaurant scene (Buffalo Wings, anyone?). Despite its working class roots, the city is often recognized as a likeable upstart in terms of travel. The mix of old and new architecture and the city’s reputation for hospitality make it one of those off-the-map places that vacationers fall in love with after they stumble upon it on the way to somewhere else, Architecture lovers will be happy with the plentiful examples. Every style from the past hundred and fifty years can be found somewhere in the city. The Allentown District is home to rows of renovated Victorian buildings. There is even a house designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Buffalo retains much of its independent feel. While larger cities have given way to gigantic big-box stores and chains, places like Elmwood Avenue and Hertel Avenue are lined with independently-owned shops, bookstores, and art galleries. The food? Barbecue and chophouses are everywhere, as are Buffalo wings. There are some fabulous Lebanese and Greek restaurants in town. Yes, it does snow it winter, but it is not as bitterly cold as most people think. Though the lake brings plenty of snow (93 inches per year, on average), the temp rarely drops below 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
